What is de Beauvoir’s argument in this essay?
The essay by de Beauvoir argues how men define women. She shows
this effectively by stating that women are the “Other”. The essay also suggests that women are
inferior to men and that we live in a world where women are only good for
cleaning and having children.
In what ways is de Beauvoir’s argument nuanced? As we
previously discussed, in what ways is her argument strengthened because of this
nuance?
The argument that de Beauvoir presents nuance by saying “how
do we define women?” but underlying there is the real argument where she is trying
to show that men define women in a different way and she exemplifies this by
using the “Others” to describe women. Another
was she uses nuance in her essay is by giving the reader all the facts, both
positive and negative, therefore allowing the reader to make their own opinion
on the topic but still sharing her views on the subject.
