2/2/12-Chapter 9

Chapter nine of the Cambridge Companion talked about money. The chapter went through each level of money or income that a family would make and explained what they would be able to purchase along with how high they are in the society. You can then take the characters from Pride and Prejudice and see where they fall on the continuum, which can help you see how they will fall in the society. The chapter also gave insight on Jane Austen's background and her money so you can see how she relates some of her situations to her books. Jane uses money to inhibit women's ability to move around in social classes, but tries to not make it an end all deal. The chapter explained how the money relies on the males, making it hard for women to change social classes without men.
