Chapter 11 Cambridge Companion

Chapter 11 of The Cambridge Companion to Jane Austen justified what I already thought about gender in that time period. Females and males were both expected to play certain roles, and these roles would eventually allow them to marry, or have a perfect “union” (pg.165) Every woman was expected to play her gender role, in order to catch the best man she could. However, if a woman was from a lower class it was assumed she could never get a man like Mr. Darcy or Mr. Bingley. In Jane Austen’s writing she often broke these stereotypical gender roles, for Mr. Darcy married Elizabeth and Mr. Bingley married Jane.
