Chapter 9 - Cambridge Companion.
Chapter nine of the Cambridge Companion really helped my understanding of money in Jane Austens novels. This chapter was all about money and how people were ranked because of it. In Austen's novels, she approaches money in three different ways. First, as a member of the upper professional ranks of her rural society. Second, as a woman in that society, and the power over money; and lastly as a novelist who joins other women novelist in a large conversation about money. In all of her novels incomes are openly discussed. This chapter talked about yearly incomes and how the amount of money you make shows what things you will have; as in carriages, horses, maids, ect. From this chapters it helps me to understand why Mrs. Bennet is so pushy of her daughters marrying someone who is rich. This is because if they do they will have a better life without worrying about the amount of income. Overall this chapter was very useful in bettering my understanding.
