Chapter 11 The Cambridge Companion

Gender- how do you understand it better now?

From reading Chapter 11 of The Cambridge Companion, I better understand gender as it relates to Jane Austen and her novels. It seems evident that in many of Austen's novels she uses gender as a main topic or point in the story line. By using gender as a main topic of her novels, Austen is able to use this theme in many different ways. In Chapter 11 I learned that Austen sometimes incorporates comedy with gender by creating comical situations between the same gender or opposite genders. In addition to incorporating comedy with gender, Austen is more widely known for using romance and gender as the basis for many of her novels.
