I think that this chapter helped me to understand because it talks about money in Jane Austen's novel. Money is very important to the characters in her novels and the money gives them power. The income that Mr. Darcy had was considerably rich, he had a very large income for that time period. They wanted to marry a man who was well off becuase that means that they would be financially secure for the rest of their life. Money is important to these characters because money would also give them status and power. That is why Mr. Darcy is so powerful and high society, he is rich. Jane Austen makes it clear through her characters that money is important. Mrs. Bennet wants all of her daughters to marry someone who is wealthy so that they will be taken care of and that they can life a good life with no financial worries. The amount of money like 10,000 pounds a year like Mr. Darcy got was substantial and it is going to provied Elizabeth with the best life possible.

  1. It is good that you noticed how important money was in Jane Austen’s novels. Since she was a single woman, she knew the harsh reality of being financially unstable, and relayed that in her novels. You could also mention that along with Mrs. Bennet, her daughters also were on a search for husbands. They knew that was their only chance at being financially stable.
