2/14- Gender
Jane Austen did not agree with her time period of women having less power than men. When writing Pride and Prejudice I believe that she created Elizabeth more headstrong then most women in the story to depict how she felt women should be able to act. Even Mrs. Bennet states that she does not know if Elizabeth can get a husband because of how headstrong she is. When Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth he makes a speech which I believe shows how most men looked at women back at that time. The way Mr. Collins made women out to be weaker than men and marriage to a good standing man was the only way for a woman to get anywhere in her life. Mr. Collins even tells Elizabeth that he is the best that she can probably get because of her family standings. Even though Georgiana Darcy has a higher social standings than Elizabeth she still cannot achieve certain dreams women today can. The differences between men and women back in Austen's time are more drastic than they are today and we can see how different they are through her novels.
