Chapter 9 "Money"

Chapter 9 gave me more understanding of why Jane uses money  in all her novels. It shows her experience with when her father retire with a good income but poor health. She uses money in three different ways which relates to the point of view that she is trying to get across. She uses your lack of income in her characters. When she said romance lies in a good income it made me wonder if she feels that you can learn to fall in love with someone just by how much money they have not your true feeings. She made a statement that said "novel writing is an economic activity that moves the conversation along. In a way I didn't understand that statement.

  1. hey i totally agree that in Jane Austen novels, the characters tell us that happiness is based on whether or not their spouse is rich or not. i also think that elizabeth is the one character who doesn't seem to think that way, even though all her friends and family try to manipulate her into thinking that is all happiness is, but i think elizabeth does not want to end up like he mother and wants to know what true happiness is.

  2. I agree that Jane Austen uses money in her novels. I feel that in the time period that Austen grew up in that most people believed that a good marriage means you have money. That is not always the case though and some of Austen's novels do have the lower class marriages who love each other. When Austen makes the statement of "novel writing is an economic activity that moves the conversation along" means that a lot of people are scholarly and read so they usually discuss books. People use books to relate to topics going on in the world.

  3. When you said,"novel writing is an economic activity that moves the conversation along." in your blog post and did not fully understand; I think what she was trying to say was that even now of days we always base everything about money. Whether it be what type of house you live in, what suburb you live in, what school you go to, or what type of clothes you wear. Therefore, the "economic activity...moves conversation along." is based on the fact that we have always and probably will always talk about our economic situation in one way or another.

  4. I wanted to add that in chapter 10 Jane Austen also uses her real life to relate to the jobs people had. In her life, her father was a clergyman much like characters in her book. This gives an understanding that Jane knows where she is coming from and uses her real life experiences to portray her characters.

    1. This is good insight and helps you understand how to write your Paper #2; that is, use things that you know about- other books you have read in high school (like the winning essay about Hamlet), or your own knowledge of something like the British navy (as we saw another winning essay do)- to create a stronger paper. :)
