Amy Tan's autobiography was compelling because it really focused on one part of her childhood and how it affected her later in her life. When she gave up on the piano as a child and it taught her it was okay to give up in other areas of her life such as school. The description of how her mother felt and talked really gave me a good feel for how it was growing up for Amy and the sadness she and her mother felt. The literacy showed was that at the end she was able to understand and play her old piano.
