Tan’s piece was a compelling autobiography
because she focuses on one story within a bigger story. She starts out telling
about her mother and how they are both so excited for her to be famous, but then
Tan realizes she wants to be only herself and basically starts sabotaging her
mother’s “training sessions”. I believe that focusing on the piano story and
telling about her mother’s death at the end was a good way to show how the
piano went from a illiteracy to a literacy.
