"Stone Soup" 1/17/12
In "Stone Soup" by Barbara Kingsolver, the literacy that is being described is divorce and being in a family. In general, I enjoyed this piece, I especially liked the style that Kingsolver used. As I read the story it felt like something in-between a novel and an essay. To some people this may be a different type of writing style that they don't care for, but I actually enjoyed it. I also liked the tone that the author used in the story. She wasn't afraid to tell it like it is for certain things, she freely expressed her opinion, but in an educated manner. I really liked how on page 67 she stated that "My daughter tells me the only time she's uncomfortable about being the child of divorced parents is when her friends say they feel sorry for her". I feel like this is a common feeling among children with divorced parents but more people like to talk about the negative things related to divorce rather than state real feelings that people have. It was a nice change to read something that was 'real'.
