"Two Kinds"

Amy Tan's autobiography is very compelling story.  It not only expresses her own personal experience growing up trying to live up to her mother's expectations, but it also represents all relationships between traditional parents and non-traditional children. Amy's goal throughout her childhood changed over the story. In the beginning, Amy's goal was to live up to her mother's expectations of her being a child prodigy.  Amy then realizes later on that what her mother wants for her is something she is not capable of and has no interest in being. Amy's goal then transforms into proving to her mom that she does not want to be what her mother aspires her to become. In the end, however, Amy and her mother become to accept their personality differences. Her mother passes on and Amy is sad to see her go. This autobiography was very compelling because there was such a transformation in Amy Tan and her mother as she grew up in America.
