What I found to be most compelling about Tan’s piece was that it showed that people change. At the beginning of the piece, the relationship with her mother was not good. The piece portrayed that with time, relationships can improve and people can change. What was compelling is that the young girl had the guts to finally stand up to her mother and express how she really felt. It is often hard to express what you really want to people in your life who really care about you and what is, in their opinion, best for you. What reinforced the message was when her mother gave her the piano in the end. This symbolized the change and the relationship that she had with her mother.
