“Parents just don’t understand” is
a Will Smith song, when I read Amy Tan’s piece I could not stop thinking about
this song. Amy Tan’s talks about her struggle as a child, talks about how her
mother pushed her to do great things, but Tan did not have the motivation to do
the things that her mother wanted her to do.
“I shouted. “I wish I were dead! Like
them.”” Tan screamed these words at her mother talking about the kids her
mother had lost in China. Tan’s piece was compelling because it is so relatable
to the reader. She uses words that the reader could understand; she pulls on
the emotions of the reader. Everyone struggle to please their parents, reading
the story makes you think about the struggles you as the reader had with your
parents. Amy Tan piece is compelling because of the way she talks about the
struggle she had with her mother and the way she was a better person for it in
the end.
