Amy Tan "Two Kinds"

Amy Tan's autobiography was compelling because of her ability to relate to the author and her ability to express her feelings as not just "sad" or "mad." She used similes that portrayed the feelings more explicitly and allowed the reader to feel the way she did through out the story. Also, how Tan talked about her struggle to impress her mother and how terrible she felt when she disappointed her. As a daughter or son, we strive to impress our parents and the thought of disappointing them is really hard to accept. It was easy to relate to Tan through this, ecspecially as a student striving to excel in school. I also enjoyed reading it because it was "easy" to read. She wasn't using too much detail that it was boring but enough to keep the reader's attention. She also used simple vocabulary. I loved the ending with the two songs connecting as one, because at one point she was the "Pleading Child" and in the end, she was "Perfectly Contented."
