"The Broken Mirror" 1/19
The Broken Mirror was unlike any piece that I have read before. I found the piece interesting, yet confusing at the same time. I assumed that this was an autobiographical piece when I began reading it because that's what we have been discussing... duh! I also enjoyed how background information was given before the actual piece was revealed. I thought this was a good literacy autobiography because it did not come out and say I am literate in this just like all of the other pieces. I also enjoyed how much context was involved, the author gave the reader an understanding of the two differing cultures and differing parts of the continent. The thing that I enjoyed the most and thought that made it a good literacy autobiography was the experience that he explained so vividly of when he went back to visit Bombay. During that event, I found it very intriguing that he went to go look up his father in the phone book. It made a good connection back to his old life with his new life. Although it had good points to be a good literacy autobiography, I thought there were somethings that made it not a good one as well. The fact that the piece was entitled broken mirror was creative and unoriginal in itself, but I did not like how the story did not 100% clarify what that meant for me in the story. I also did not like how I could not 100% pinpoint his literacy, I believed that there could have a couple options. I do not like that I want to be able to fully know what the piece is about and what the person's literacy is.
